Big Man Reclining is a self-portrait in which the artist depicted himself on a narrow couch with his arms crossed behind the head, with a chair holding a glass of lemon tea next to the couch. The artist said about this piece, “'Big Man Reclining'… shows that moment when you have an array of brushes in your hand, you feel exhausted, and you have to kick back and rest. You recline on a chair and you’re afraid of touching anything because your hands are wet with paint. You gingerly rest your hands in your lap… This is a very interesting moment in which to paint yourself.”
