Born in Ethiopia 1974, Aida Muluneh left the country at an early age, spending her childhood between Yemen and England before settling in Canada, then getting a BA in film, radio and television from Howard University in Washington, DC, and working as a photojournalist for the Washington Post.
As her practice moved more into art photography, Muluneh gravitated back to her homeland. In 2007, she returned to Addis Ababa where she founded an educational organization DESTA (Developing and Educating Society Through Art), and Addis Foto Fest, Ethiopia’s first international photography festival. Based in Addis today, Muluneh is on a mission to dispel stereotypes about Ethiopia and advance her country’s contemporary visual culture by documenting its heritage and facilitating global artistic exchanges.
