Dora Espinoza is a Peruvian-born, New York City-based artist and curator specializing in geometric abstraction. She comes from a multi-generational family of artists, studied photography and graphic design in New Jersey and has worked as a photo correspondent for UPI in Peru before taking on the curatorial career to promote Peruvian art in NYC. Dora has curated exhibitions for the United Nations and created Oro del Perú, a jewelry collection inspired by pre-Columbian art. Her artistic and curatorial work has been showcased in major venues worldwide.
Espinosa created this digital photocollage in 2003 as part of the El Dorado portfolio. She started with images of aerial views of Machu Picchu and its surrounding landscapes, including Cusco, Ollantaytambo, Sacsayhuamán, and the Sacred Valley that she captured during a helicopter flight with a news crew. She then manipulated the images with Photoshop infusing them with elements of fantasy and mystery and transforming the natural and historical beauty into intricate formations resembling traditional Andean ornaments and futuristic cityscapes at once.
In Labyrinth, a simple trick with flipping and mirroring an image of Machu Picchu's historic hilltop ruins created a visual puzzle challenging the viewers' ability to comprehend the motif and inviting a prolonged observation to solve the puzzle.
